Logistics

Logistics as a Business Environment

Logistics is one of the crucial corporate functions for coordinating and controlling global value creation and efficiently increasing customer satisfaction.

The German logistics market has a size of approx. 268 billion euros (2020) and thus a share of around 8% of German GDP. Logistics is thus Germany's third-largest economic sector (after the automotive industry and trade) and employs about 3 million people. Logistics also enables increasing value creation in Germany in the context of globalisation. The share of logistics costs in the total costs of companies is between 5 and 8% in industry, and up to 18% in trade.

The European logistics market is worth around 1120 billion euros (2018). Germany's share of 25% is due to its top position in logistics infrastructure and logistics technologies.

Career Opportunities and Qualification Requirements

The field of logistics offers excellent career opportunities: one of the reasons for this is the high and broadly diversified qualification requirements. Thus, in addition to technical and methodological competence in the technical and business areas, social and intercultural competences are essential for the design and management of global cross-company value-added networks.

It is to be expected that, especially against the background of advancing globalisation and the increasing scope of tasks of logistics managers, the demand for qualified workers in logistics will continue to rise at all levels.

Depending on the students' interests and specialisation, the Master's specialisation in logistics offers the ideal prerequisites for this demanding professional field in industry and trade, at logistics service providers, public or private planning and research institutions and in the IT-related logistics environment or in management consultancies.

Logistics is characterised by a high degree of system-oriented networked thinking and acting. It represents an integration concept of the engineering, business administration, planning and information technology fields. This circumstance is the reason for logistics' outstanding ability to act as an interface between the above-mentioned disciplines and all areas of entrepreneurial activity. It fulfils its task as a coordination function, transfers its approaches to corporate management and thus creates a comprehensive process-oriented approach focussed on fulfilling customer wishes.
