Module production logistics

Increasing customer requirements demand intelligent logistics solutions

The development from a seller's market to a buyer's market has led to a change in the status of the customer in industry in recent decades. Manufacturing companies are increasingly active in international procurement and sales markets in order to exploit cost advantages and growth potential.

Custom-fit and integrated logistics for production

Producing companies are facing an increasingly demanding competitive environment with high demands on quality, costs and delivery times. The design of production structures is of decisive importance in overcoming these complex challenges. Leading companies use the potential of cooperations, strengthen the integration of upstream and downstream processes into production and concentrate on their core competencies through outsourcing. In addition, the adaptation and further development of excellent methods and concepts ensures continuous improvement.

Topics

The course is oriented to current practical tasks. Current topics for the organization of the production process, the material flow as well as the production planning and control are presented.

Content Part 1

During the first half of the semester aspects of internal production logistics will be covered. One focus is on the design of the production process, i.e. the organisational form and the concretisation of the production type. Different production processes are discussed and understood on the basis of application cases. Another focus is production planning and control. Pull and push control methods are presented. A third aspect is the factory and layout planning as well as the informational support of the topics covered, including ERP systems and simulation tools.

Content Part 2

In the second half product development and the topic of process evaluation and improvement are dealt with. Within the framework of product and production development, the focus is on the design of start-up management and on concrete approaches to logistics-oriented product development. The integration of customer requirements forms the framework for this and is addressed throughout the course of the lecture.  Another focus is on process evaluation and improvement. Based on the strategic orientation of the company, measurement and evaluation systems for recording production-related business processes will be presented. On this basis, methods for process optimization such as Poka Yoke, Kaizen and SMED will be presented and discussed using concrete application examples.

The handling of the learned topics will be clarified in a practice-oriented manner by means of company visits to manufacturing companies in the Berlin area.  

Learning Objectives

The Module Production Logistics looks at the management of internal and inter-company logistics processes in manufacturing companies.

The course Production Logistics provides an overview of the design of the production process within and between manufacturing companies. Current challenges for logistics and practical concepts are specifically extending the scientific approach.

Requisites

The contents of the Bachelor course Introduction to logistics is required for this module.

For Logistics Master students, the Production Logistics module is an elective module in the engineering sciences.
