Basics of Urban Logistics (Modul Angewandte Logistikforschung)

As urbanization increases at an unprecedented velocity in developing and emerging countries, it poses new chal-lenges and opportunities that require the implementation of innovative urban concepts. Cities account for approx-imately 70 percent of the total energy consumption and are responsible for around 80 percent of the total energy related greenhouse gas emissions globally. Specially in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), cities also assume a critical role in sustaining economic growth, since the 143 main cities in SSA together account for 50% of the total region’s gross domestic product (GDP). Currently, the transport sector contributes to 50% of CO2 emissions of Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, and the number of passenger and freight vehicles is rising. The situation is even exacerbating by a rising demand for e-commerce which can lead to additional last-mile traffic. Considering the ever-increasing population of Rwanda and its’ capital, innovative logistics and mobility solutions are necessary.

Learning Objectives

The module introduces the students to logistics in an urban setting. The students will learn the theoretical foundation of urban logistics. Challenges at the core of logistics in an urban setting will be presented together with solutions addressing those challenges from across the globe. How to introduce new approaches to real life urban settings will also be addressed. The module will focus on urban logistics across the globe with a special focus on Germany and Rwanda. Sustainability will play a special focus throughout the module.
