Smart e-User concept for electric mobile City Logistics


As part of the Federal Government’s Showcase Regions for Electric Mobility, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology is funding the Smart e-User project – one of 30 core projects taking place in Berlin Brandenburg. Bases on a decision by the German Bundestag, research and development into alternative drive systems is to take place across four selected showcase regions. The Federal Government is providing a total of €180 million in funding for these large scale demonstration and pilot projects. The aim is to test electric mobility within the overlapping system of energy, vehicle, and transport.

Due to missing knowledge of utilization of electric mobility, the usage of electric vehicles in commercial transport stays behind its possibilities. There are various unsolved issues and challenges, especially in regard to the integration of an energy management, needed IT-interfaces as well as to the redesign of logistics and business processes with respect to electric vehicles. Other outstanding issues, which are not sufficiently researched, are the overall effects of process redesign on urban traffic and congestions as well as the use of renewable generated energy for charging the electric vehicles.

The modular structured Smart e-User concept focusses on the interface of commercially used electric vehicles, logistic processes, traffic data, energy-management and economically sustainable approaches. The major objective of the research consortium is the implementation and evaluation of a broad utilization of electric vehicles (up to 3.5 t) in commercial transport. Economically sustainable practices for supply of selected urban areas in Berlin with goods and services will be demonstrated. Hereby, a complete integration of electric vehicles in company’s business processes will take place, with respect to the identified user groups in commercial freight and business passenger transport. In addition, potentials of electric mobile city hubs within urban distribution will be estimated and analysed, particularly in context of commercial freight transport.

An IT-based dynamic vehicle routing planning – tailored to fit the specifications of electric vehicles – complemented by recent traffic and weather information as well as order management data, will be developed. This leads to improved “last-mile distribution in urban areas” with respect to transparency in fleet management, delivery reliability and sustainable transport. The developed concepts of electric city logistics will be checked in various field tests with in total 30 electric vehicles. Furthermore, an extensive prototype simulation will within an energetic, traffic, logistic and economic context

The Smart e-User project is part of the Showcase for electric mobility and encouraged by the Federal Government and the states of Berlin and Brandenburg for the next three years and is coordinated by the German initiative ‘eMO-Berlin Brandenburg’.

German High Tech Champions Award 2014

GHTC - the German High Tech Champions Award 2014 in "Urban Distribution" will go to the "Smart e-User" project. The award is issured by Fraunhofer, Europe's largest application-oriented research organization. The GHTC-Award is part of the initiative to "Promote Innovation and Research in Germany" which is founded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The festive GHTC Award Ceremony honoring the winners and offering a business networking platform will be held on the evening of April 3rd, 2014 at the German Embassy in Paris in front of potential business and cooperation partners, journalists and distinguished guests.
