IPLogE – Integration of Practice-oriented Logistics Education in Ethiopia

Project Content

Ethiopia has set itself the goal of becoming a central manufacturing hub in Africa, especially focusing on the textile and food industry sector. For both industries, logistics is an essential cross-functional enabler for efficient operations in value creation networks and therefore assists the sustainable development of a country. This being said, logistics education has to be understood as a fundamental basis for economic growth. However, the current way of teaching logistics on a university-level is mostly based on educating students on theoretical logistics concepts, instead of linking those concepts to practice-relevant content. This leads to a gap between theoretically understanding logistics concepts and being able to apply them in a concrete business environment. Consequently, students are not well enough educated for their upcoming tasks in practice, leading to lower employment opportunities after finishing studies.

Contributing to this circumstance, the project IPLogE aims at improving the practice-orientation of current logistics education at the Addis Ababa University (AAU) and adjusting it to the logistics specifics of the textile and food industry in Ethiopia. This joint project of Technische Universität Berlin (TUB) and AAU thereby focuses on better preparing students for upcoming requirements of the labor market and providing them with opportunities to get in touch with potential employers earlier. To achieve this, the project seeks to contribute to the following main fields of action (among others):

  1. AAU Bachelor and master modules will be revised by integrating practice-oriented logistics case studies from the textile and food industry to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

  2. Labor market relevant offers will be implemented on a regular basis, that support students to get in touch with practice earlier (e.g. annual logistics contact fair, regular company field trips).

  3. An annual co-working seminar will be established in which students from AAU and TUB will collaboratively work on real-life cases from companies in Germany and Ethiopia. Besides the practical application, students gain intercultural competencies relevant for future employment opportunities.

  4. AAU und TUB will finish joint practice-oriented research projects on process improvement and resource efficiency in the textile and food industries. The aim will be to create synergies between conducting case studies for teaching purpose and analyzing those case studies for research.

AAU and TUB will be supported by a selected group of business partners from Ethiopia, Germany and Switzerland that will contribute practice-relevant content and assist the achievements of intended project Outcomes.

Opening of a Logistics Lab Center at the Addis Ababa University

In collaboration with the TUB and with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) the first Logistics Lab Center of our partner university was inaugurated on February 24th, 2020.

In this Center students will be enabled to work with different learning softwares (e.g. ERP systems, simulation of supply chains and optimization tools) as well as exchange ideas and research interests with the teaching staff of the university to generate innovative solutions for current and upcoming challenges of logistics in Ethiopia and the African continent.
