Future technology Blockchain


Disruptive technologies such as the Internet are forcing both society and individual companies to undergo drastic change. Established concepts can disappear from one day to the next in insignificance and successful companies that stick to them for too long will be overtaken by the competition. It is therefore of existential importance for the long-term survival of companies that these innovative technologies are understood and used to rethink existing systems.

The Blockchain technology has without doubt the potential to be a disruptive technology that can change entire business processes. It is a technology concept that enables decentralized and unalterable storage of verified transactions. Driven by a paradigm shift from a centralized, hierarchical design, planning and control of logistic networks to a decentralized, autonomous logistics, new fields of application are opened up and the networking of different fields of knowledge comes to the fore. The changes in logistics range from operative to strategic reorganization of the flow of goods, information and finance. In the context of logistics, decentralized technologies and forms of organization can help to increase end-to-end transparency along global supply chains. Improved goods tracking and tamper-proof data lead to more security, efficiency and sustainability within logistics networks. Previous business processes are not only being digitized, but also enable new fields of application and forms of collaboration.

At the Chair of Logistics, extensive research is conducted in the areas of Blockchain Technology in particular, and Distributed Ledger Technologies in general. In addition to the basic teaching of technology fundamentals in the courses, this includes dissertations and practice-oriented research in the form of case studies and industry workshops.

Research project

Dissertation Florian Sinn: Paradigms of Digital Transformation to a Decentralized Logistics - Conceptual Foundations and Implications for the Implementation using the Example of BC Technology (working title)

The doctoral thesis deals with the question of what decentralized logistics can look like when tools such as block chain technology are applied at all levels of logistics. The final product of the thesis is a comprehensive, theoretical model of decentralized logistics considering the principles of blockchain technology with all its capabilities and limitations. An intermediate result is a detailed overview of the influence a decentralization technology (using the example of the block chain technology) can have on the different levels and flows of logistics.

Dissertation Peter Verhoeven: Design of a management model for sustainability development in logistics by DLT / Blockchain

By improving the transparency and trustworthiness of data, Blockchain offers a unique opportunity for logistics networks to promote and develop sustainable processes. Examples include tracking CO2 emissions along the supply chain, fair payments from suppliers and anti-corruption measures in developing countries. The dissertation examines the extent to which the technology changes sustainable aspects of the individual players in the market and the logistics network (companies, suppliers, customers and competitors) (à "Sustainable Development Path"). Furthermore, management areas and success factors for dealing with the technology are developed.

Competence Center for International Networks (ILNET)

The Competence Center for International Logistics Networks (ILNET) is part of the Chair of Logistics at the Technische Universität Berlin (TUB) under the direction of Prof. Dr. Frank Straube. Over the past 14 years, the competence center has made an important contribution to teaching and research in the field of logistics at the TUB and beyond in its international network of universities and industrial partners. ILNET always strives for the integration of research and practice through different formats like industry workshops, conferences, management concepts, supply chain case studies for teaching and education, an online logistics planning tool (TUB Logistics Navigator) and much more.Within this framework, a workshop on the potentials of blockchain technology was held in February with 30 companies. A further workshop on this topic is planned for Q3 2020. Further information will be available here in due course.

Competence Center for Logistik and IT-Systems

Within the CC LogIT, a joint research project is being worked on with the participating chairs. The project aims to create a technical solution that enables the construction of high-quality and tamper-proof data sets, which can be used for inference with existing AI algorithms as well as for the training of AI-based algorithms. The solution goes far beyond the container data collected today by combining a seamless sensor-based monitoring of sea freight containers with an open, decentralized IT platform based on suitable block chain technologies.
