Research Project: Humanitarian Logistics

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. rer. pol. h.c. Helmut Baumgarten

Helmut Baumgarten studied Industrial Engineering and Management in Berlin. He worked in energy and transport planning companies before finishing his doctorate in engineering in 1972. Shortly after his postdoctoral thesis was accepted in 1974, he was promoted to a professor at Berlin Institute of Technology (TU Berlin) in 1976. He founded the Logistics Department and developed it to one of the leading institutions in research and education in logistics in Germany.

At the same time, Professor Baumgarten was active in various administrative positions inside the TU Berlin. He acted as a director of the Institute of Technology and Management and was member of the board of trustees at TU Berlin. Furthermore, he was in the position of a chairman of the study program of industrial engineering (GKWi) since 1991.

Professor Baumgarten is founding member of the German Logistics Association (BVL) and was its deputy chairman until 1999. For many years, he was in charge of the contents of the yearly German Logistics Congress of the BVL in Berlin, the biggest business and research conference in logistics in Germany. Furthermore, Professor Baumgarten promoted the occupational profile of industrial engineers and logisticians. He is board member of the German Association of Industrial Engineers (VWI) and main author of the 13th volume of the “Berufsbild des Wirtschaftsingenieurs” (“Business Profile of Industrial Engineers”).

Professor Baumgarten is founder of several enterprises, amongst other the “Zentrum für Logistik und Unternehmensplanung GmbH (ZLU)“, and founder and majority shareholder of “Logplan GmbH” and ”LMC Logistics and Management Consulting”. Moreover, he is consultant and board member of various enterprises.

His research activities are proven by more than 500 publications and more than 120 supervised doctoral theses in the fields of logistics, material handling and corporate planning. He is editor of several books and member of the editor board of several scientific journals. Some of his latest and most important publications are the edited volume “Das Beste der Logistik: Innovationen, Strategien, Umsetzungen“ (“Best of Logistics”) in 2008, the current version of the “Berufsbild des Wirtschaftsingenieurs” in 2011 and the edited volume “Humanitäre Logistik” (“Humanitarian Logistics”) in 2011.

For his exceptional merits in science in Germany, he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in December 2003. In 2007, he was elected in the Logistics Hall of Fame in Germany, which honors outstanding personalities who were remarkably active in the development of logistics and supply chain management.

In tribute to his commitment to the economic research and teaching, the European Business School (EBS) International University awarded the honour and the degree of a Doctor rerum politicarum honoris causa (Dr. rer. pol. h. c.) to Prof. Baumgarten in November 2008. As a researcher, Prof. Baumgarten was awarded the DHL Innovation Award for his “outstanding merits about Logistics in research and practice in Germany” in December 2010.

Since 2009, Professor Baumgarten is heading the research project “Humanitarian Logistics – Logistics for hunger regions in Africa”, founded by the Kuehne Foundation, at TU Berlin. Part of the work of the project work was the initial realization of the African Logistics Conference in Dar es Salaam / Tanzania in 2011, and the establishment of the BVL Working Group "Humanitarian Logistics" which was headed by Baumgarten until 2011. In October 2012, Dr. Jennifer Schwarz and Dr.-Ing Martin Kessler were awarded the German Science Price in Logistics together with Prof. Baumgarten as their supervising professor, for their dissertations, both resulting from the project.
